BITHYNIA. Nicaea. Augustus, 27 BC-AD 14. Assarion (Orichalcum, 20 mm, 7.02 g, 1 h), Thorius Flaccus, proconsul, circa 25 BC. NIKAIEΩN Bare head of Thorius Flaccus to right. Rev. EΠI ANΘYΠATOY ΘOPIOY ΦΛAKOY - HPA Head of Hera-Juno Lanuvia to right, wearing goat-skin headdress; to left and right, monograms. RG p. 399, 19. RPC I 2029. Very rare and in exceptional condition for the issue. Well struck and with an excellent portrait of the proconsul. Very fine.

Thorius Flaccus served as proconsul of the province of Bithynia sometime in the mid 20s BC. The reverse type with Hera in the guise of Juno Lanuvia refers to the Lanuvian origins of his family, which is indicative of the degree of veneration Greek poleis used to express towards the powerful Roman proconsuls.
